Guiding race for all: Navigating towards inclusion and sustainability

Project number: 6097350 ERASMUS-SPORT-2024-SSCP

SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT:

Context: This project builds on previous successful collaboration in social sport, notably the ‘Sport Social Act’ (group cycling) and ‘Race Ability’ (inclusive obstacle courses) projects, which led to the creation of our interactive training platform to help social sport: (sportsocialact.org).

Concept: The project develops eco-responsible orienteering races, combining sporting activity and environmental commitment. Originating in Sweden, orienteering combines mental and physical effort, practiced on foot or by bike in natural or urban environments.

Sustainability: The training of volunteers and the creation of teaching resources ensure that activities continue after the project. The online platform enables experience sharing and ongoing training.

AIMS OF OUR PROJECT

We aim to achieve the following objectives

  1. Promote physical and mental well-being: To use orienteering as a means of improving the physical and mental health of the beneficiaries of our project.
  2. Encourage social inclusion: Create an inclusive environment in orienteering where all participants, including those with fewer opportunities, have equal access and opportunities to participate in orienteering activities to promote social cohesion and inclusion.
  3. Develop the teaching and technical skills of volunteers: train the future leaders of orienteering activities and sporting events, with a view to increasing the number of such events in the consortium’s communities and elsewhere.
  4. Stimulate voluntary work: Promote voluntary work in inclusive sport, particularly in the organization and management of orienteering events.
  5. Strengthen the active citizenship of orienteering beneficiaries: Integrate the act of ecological citizenship into orienteering activities in order to raise awareness of sustainable practices among the beneficiaries of these activities.
  6. Develop partnerships: Establish European and local cooperation within and beyond the sports sector to promote support and sustain orienteering activities within the communities of the consortium and elsewhere.
